Indy 500 Winner Takes Home the Borg-Warner Trophy and Jostens Ring
Indy 500 Borg-Warner Trophy and Jostens Ring
Josef Newgarden has done it. Newgarden claims the first place title at the 107th Indianapolis 500 in a wreck-filled race, and took home the Indy 500 Jostens ring and Borg-Warner Trophy. It was a dramatic finish across the finish line after Newgarden pulled a strategic last-lap ambush on defending winner Marcus Ericsson in the final turn with seconds until crossing the finish line. This drama filled race was referred to as“ the greatest spectacle in racing” after many crashes, collisions, and competition from formidable racers across the world battled for the winning title.

The Indianapolis 500, or commonly called Indy 500, has been held annually since 1911. This year was different from previous races as IndyCars hit top speeds over 240 miles per hour on the straightaways. These new levels of speed brought on new levels of danger as many racers ended their race with nasty crashes into the side walls–or even worst, into other IndyCars taking two out of the biggest race of the year.
Newgarden managed to keep out of harm's way and got the job done. Ericsson, who lost the winning title on the last turn, blamed the numerous restarts after collisions on his ability to maintain the number one position to the end. While multiple restarts had an impact on Ericsson’s momentum, Newgarden took advantage of the situation and rose above the restarts to bring home the winning title in 2023.
